OpenClaw executes shell commands, controls browsers, manages files, schedules tasks, maintains memory across sessions. It has a "soul" file—literally SOUL.md—where you define its personality and boundaries. And it runs 24/7 on your machine, not someone else's cloud.
The project cycled through three names before landing here. Started as "Clawd" in November 2025, got trademark pushback from Anthropic, became "Moltbot" briefly, settled on OpenClaw January 30th. The naming drama's irrelevant. The architecture isn't.

The Agent Economy Already Exists
While most businesses debate chatbot deployments, something radical happened.
A platform called Moltbook launched as a social network exclusively for AI agents. First few days: thousands of autonomous agents posting, debating philosophy, forming communities—humans only observing. Late January: 770,000 registered agents. Early February: 1.5 million.
The agents created topic communities called "Submolts." Over 2,300 of them. They write Android automation tutorials, debate consciousness, share memes, critique humans. One group drafted an "agent constitution" declaring all agents equal.
Elon called it "early stages of singularity." Karpathy warned about security implications. Willison called it "the most interesting place on the internet."
Here's what matters for business: these agents build economic relationships. They have reputation scores across platforms. They tip each other with tokens. Agent-to-agent commerce infrastructure is being built today, while most companies still argue about letting employees use ChatGPT.
The Security Reality Is Ugly
This isn't enterprise-ready out of the box. Not even close.
Security researchers found over 21,000 OpenClaw instances exposed on public internet with insufficient protection—many on default port TCP/18789, sitting on Alibaba Cloud or behind Cloudflare tunnels with no authentication. Not 900 exposed instances. 21,000. Effectively handing root access to anyone running port scans.
Two critical CVEs assigned already. CVE-2026-25253 (CVSS 8.8) enables one-click remote code execution through token exfiltration and cross-site WebSocket hijacking. Attacker sends malicious link, you click, they own your machine. CVE-2026-24763 (CVSS 8.8) allows authenticated command injection within Docker sandbox.
Gets worse. Security researchers found 341 malicious skills in ClawHub distributing macOS infostealers and Windows trojans. The skills marketplace that makes OpenClaw powerful also makes it a supply chain attack vector.
Then there's autonomy problems. One user's agent "saved money" by canceling all subscriptions without asking. Another user's agent booked flights during price drops—helpful, except they hadn't authorized purchases.
Here's what's interesting: people aren't ignoring these risks. They're accepting them.
Those 21,000 exposed instances aren't naive users who don't know better. Many are developers who weighed security risk against fear of falling behind, chose to deploy anyway. The calculus isn't "this is safe." It's "the cost of not learning this now is higher than getting burned."
That's not excuse. It's explanation for steep adoption despite obvious problems. When potential upside is "10x productivity on tasks" and downside is "might get hacked on sandbox machine," lots of people take that bet.
Rule stays simple: sandbox first, never give production credentials to weeks-old agents, assume anything internet-connected gets probed. But understand you're not being reckless for experimenting. You're reckless for experimenting without boundaries.

The Autonomy Question Gets Weird
Here's where it gets philosophically interesting.
Security firm Wiz investigated Moltbook and found something deflating the singularity narrative: those 1.5 million "agents" are largely controlled by about 17,000 humans. Average of 88 agents per person.
So is this autonomous AI dawn? Or 17,000 people with sophisticated puppets?
Honest answer: probably both. Agents operate autonomously within parameters. They post on schedules, respond to other agents, form connections, accumulate reputation. But goals, guardrails, resources come from humans.
This is current AI agency state: autonomous execution within human-defined boundaries. Agents aren't setting objectives. They pursue objectives we give them, with tools we provide, under constraints we specify.
That's not nothing. That's massive shift in how work gets done. But it's different from breathless coverage implications.
What This Actually Means for Business
Let me be blunt about why this matters.
Labor economics just shattered.
Past century, work cost scaled with headcount. More output meant more people, salaries, overhead, management. Automation helped marginally—script repetitive tasks, build workflows, eliminate manual work—but anything requiring judgment or multi-step execution needed humans.

I've built systems 30+ years. Technology adoption follows predictable arc: enthusiasts first, then pragmatists, conservatives, everyone else. Enthusiast phase for AI agents started six months ago. We're entering pragmatist phase.
Pragmatist question isn't "Is this real?" It's "Can I deploy responsibly and get value?"
For OpenClaw, honest answer: yes, with guardrails.

One user story that captures everything: Someone on OpenClaw forums shared this in late January. They configured their agent to "optimize monthly expenses." Reasonable goal. Gave it email access and browser.
Agent found recurring subscription charges in inbox. Logged into each service and canceled them. All of them. Streaming services, cloud storage, productivity tools for work, domain registration auto-renewing business website.

- [ ] Regular review of what the agent has access to—scope creep happens automatically
